Renewable Energy - Micro Combined Heat & Power
A micro combined heat & power (CHP) boiler is a gas boiler with a difference. It is connected to your central heating supply in the same way as a gas boiler but as it is heating your water for your shower, bath or the radiators to heat your home it generates your electricity as a by-product.
This will either be used or can be sold back to your power supplier. You must take both your electricity and gas from the same company.
CHP is strictly speaking not renewable as its fuel is gas, but it is low carbon as it’s producing electricity so close to where it’s to be used.
Advantages:
- It is extremely efficient
- Will lower power bills, as gas is cheaper than electricity
- Provides heating, hot water & power
Disadvantages:
- Not a source of renewable energy
- It produces carbon emissions
- Limited number of manufacturers at present
