Renewable Energy - Micro Biomass

Willow plantation for biomass
Biomass involves using wood as a fuel to generate heat, and sometimes electricity. The fuel used is normally wood chips or pellets, or logs for domestic boilers.

Fuel is sourced from specifically grown crops such as willow or from low-grade wood. Biomass has been used trouble free in other European countries and U.S.A. for many years. It is accurately controlled, & the burning temperatures & mix of oxygen ensures virtually no smoke.

Any emissions are normally restricted to when the boiler is lit and when it is cooling down. The carbon dioxide released when the wood is burnt is equivalent to that absorbed by plants during their growth so it is seen as “carbon neutral”.

Advantages:
  •   Minimal carbon emissions
  •   Modern systems are extremely efficient
  •   Provides heating & hot water

Disadvantages:
  •   Wood pellets are expensive at the moment
  •   Can be expensive to install
