Renewable Energy Information

View of a wind farm
Renewable energy is energy that comes from sources that are basically unlimited. This includes the sun, wind, flowing water and the heat of the earth and air; or replaceable fuels like plants.

During the last 150 years society has become ever more reliant on fossil fuels: oil, coal & gas. These fuels form so slowly compared with the rate that we use them that they are considered to be limited. Fossil fuels also produce greenhouse gases & other pollutants. This is linked to changes in the Earth’s climate. Renewable energy produces few or no greenhouse gases.

Renewable energy:

  • Helps to keep the air clean
  • Helps to reduce the production of carbon dioxide & other greenhouse gasses
  • Makes use of secure, local & replenishable resources

*** For information on installing renewable energy on your house and whether Planning Permission will be required, view Development Controls pages on micro generation and planning permission. ***

Low Carbon Buildings Programme
The DTI's Low carbon buildings programme will provide grants for microgeneration technologies for householders, community organisations, schools, the public sector and businesses. For more information see the grants section.

Green electricity tariff
Every household can use renewable energy even if you can't afford to install the technology in your own home.

By signing up to a Green electricity tariff your supplier is obliged to source for you an amount equal to some, or all of the electricity you consume, from existing renewable energy sources. There is no change to the way the electricity is supplied to you and it is no more or less reliable.

For more information on green tariffs, visit a tariff switching website, such as U-Switch.com .This is an example of site you could use, there are others available.
