Right to Buy

The Right to Buy scheme was first introduced in 1980 and gives eligible council tenants the right to buy their property from their council at a discount. Tenants of housing associations who hold the preserved right to buy (PRTB) may also be eligible for the scheme.

Tenants who have been a secure council tenant for at least two years (or five years if the tenancy started after 18 January 2005) are likely to have the Right to Buy their council home at a discount.

Tenants who were secure tenants of a local authority where the ownership of the  property was transferred to a housing association may be eligible for a Preserved Right to Buy (PRTB) for their home. This will only apply where tenants are still the tenant of the same property before and after the transfer.

Some properties are exempt from the Right to Buy. For further information on the Right to Buy for Sheffield Homes tenants in Sheffield, see our Right to Buy pages or the Right to Buy page on the Sheffield Homes website.

Further useful information on Right to Buy, eligibility and how to apply may be found on the government information website and the Communities & Local Government website.
