Affordable Housing

What is affordable housing?
Over recent years housing costs have gone up in rental and sale markets, leading many people to be priced out of the private housing market.

Sheffield City Council is unable to control the housing market, but is committed to increasing the supply of affordable housing for people who are unable to buy or rent suitable property on the open market.

New affordable housing for sale and rent is being built all over Sheffield. This is being achieved by Sheffield City Council in two ways:
  • By working in partnership with Housing Associations to use central government grant to build new housing for rent or shared ownership.
  • Through the planning process; by requiring private developers to make part of their new developments affordable for rent or shared ownership.
