About the Area
The South West Area is the second largest Area Panel area in Sheffield. It lies between the Sheaf and Rivelin valleys, stretching from Crosspool and Greystones to the West of the city out to the high moors of Hallam and Burbage bordering the Peak District.
The Area incorporates Dore & Totley ward, Ecclesall Ward, part of Fulwood ward and a small part of Crookes ward and has a population of almost 50,000 (2001 Census). The Area is the most affluent in the city, with very few signs of deprivation. There are high educational attainment levels, low crime and unemployment rates and generally fewer health problems than elsewhere in Sheffield. There are pockets of disadvantage across the area, a large elderly population, and some problems of isolation and poor access to services.
The South West is generally ineligible for mainstream regeneration funding, however it occasionally benefits from planning gain moneys and lottery funding.
