About the area

 

The Owlerton / Southey Green Area Panel area lies due north of Burngreave and the city centre.  The area covers the electoral ward of Southey and parts of the Firth Park, Burngreave, and East Ecclesfield Wards. The area is bounded by green belt to the north, Barnsley Road to the east, Parkwood Springs to the south and the Sheffield to Stocksbridge railway to the west.

 

Southey and Owlerton is dominated by several large public housing estates with over half of the housing owned by the Local Authority.  It is made up from a number of distinct communities including Parson Cross and Southey, Foxhill, Longley, Shirecliffe.  The area is characterised by a mix of pre and post war housing and 1960s maisonettes and flats.  There are a number of small local shopping centres and many green spaces including several large parks.  There is a small rural area to the north west with farm and woodland.  The area’s population structure mirrors that of the city as a whole, with slightly higher proportions of households with children, single parents and pensioners.  There is a very low percentage of ethnic minority populations within the area.  Southey and Owlerton is an area of relatively high deprivation.  Southey Green ward was ranked the most deprived in Sheffield in 2000 and within the top 8% nationally.  Unemployment is above the national and city averages, there is a high level of low-income households, educational attainment is amongst the lowest in the city and the area is considered to have the poorest health in the city.
