Issues and Actions
The Area Panel, through consultation, discussion at Panel meetings and liaison with partner organisations throughout the area, has identified a number of critical issues in the North Area:
Transport
Improving public transport both to and from the city centre and, critically, around the area, which is made difficult by its isolation.
Employment
Developing better access to employment and core services including education, healthcare and childcare.
Rural Isolation
Removing the sense of isolation often compounded by a feeling that issues important to communities living outside the city are under-appreciated when resources are allocated across Sheffield
Local Facilities and Services
Ensuring that new developments bring improvements to local facilities and services, thus avoiding undue pressure on existing resources.
Housing
Ensuring a continuous supply of affordable housing to counter the increase in the construction of higher priced stock.
In addition to these, North Area Action is continously working with regeneration bodies, community forums, local and city-wide projects and Council service departments, the Area Panel works to achieve other improvements in the area and to link with city-wide objectives. These are detailed below:
Community Engagement and Democratic Renewal
- The Area Panel will actively support an increased level of community participation across the area through the promotion of inclusive local community groups.
- The Area Panel will work to strengthen the role of local democracy by developing the relationship between the City and Parish councils.
- There is a need to work with young people in order to develop their full participation in the area.
Partnership Working
- The North Area Panel will support the development and management of the North Area Regeneration Partnership (NARP) to bring together regeneration work in the North (across area and agency boundaries).
Specific Service Improvements
A number of service development issues will be pursued by the Panel and its partners in areas of need:
- Locally based inter linked education and training initiatives will be developed including greater opportunities for lifelong learning and for young people to access post-16 education.
- Access to services including healthcare, youth orientated services and childcare will be extended.
- Community safety and policing issues will be considered while increasing opportunities for employment remains a priority.
- Transport initiatives will be developed to enhance access to isolated areas and the delivery of highway maintenance, environment and waste services will be improved. The Area Panel will also strive to improve the provision, awareness of and access to leisure facilities by improving existing sites, promoting facilities and improving transport links.
