Issues, Actions and Plans
The priorities and projects below are identified within the Netherthorpe, Hillsborough , Walkley Area Plan and are based on local knowledge gained from Elected Members, work with local groups, comments received from the public at Area Panel meetings, the expertise of departmental Link Officers and ongoing work from last year’s plan. Plans can be accessed at the bottom of the page.
The NHW Area Panel will be working to the following key priorities:
Environment
A critical issue for the area panel is the traffic problems which include congestion, road safety and parking issues. These have come about, partly as a consequence of the dense population and partly due to the topography of some areas, which are steep with narrow roads. The Area Panel will continue to work alongside our Highways link officer and to allocate the Small Highways Scheme funding appropriately. We will also work alongside Street Force, Parks and Countryside, Veolia, Action for Stannington and other agencies to monitor and react to streetscene and environmental issues across the patch.
Community Safety
Community safety structures are continuing to develop across the North West of Sheffield with Area Panel involvement in two Neighbourhood Action groups (NAGS) and four community safety groups. The Area panel will play an active part in strengthening the role of the community in these structures and assisting the Safer Neighbourhood Officers to develop action plans based on local need.
Children and Young People
Area Panel NRF funding will fund for a further year a variety of projects aimed at helping children, young people and their families. As a result of this funding the area will benefit from additional detached youth work, Sheffield Wednesday community coaching sessions aimed at raising attendance and attainment, small grants distributed through the Children and Young People Theme group, Junior Warden Scheme and a Gun Crime project. As well as the NRF funding we will continue to work alongside agencies and groups to improve services for young people.
Supporting Communities
The Area Panel will continue to work alongside the wide range of community and voluntary sector groups in the area which includes a number of community forums. Many of these community forums and groups feed into the work of the North West Partnership which aims to co-ordinate the regeneration of North West Sheffield in order to improve the impact of regeneration efforts across the area and encourage resources into the area.
Quality of Life
The overall purpose of this theme is to improve the quality of life in targeted communities within the Area Panel. Quality of life is a broad concept and the theme is made up of a variety of carefully selected projects which include a community safety project working with young people, grant funding for community forums, funding to support the Upperthorpe Healthy Living Centre, a sport and recreation plan for the area and continued financial support and involvement in the North West Regeneration Partnership and Hillsborough Town Centre Development Project.
Consultation and Communication
We aim to keep members of the public well informed through the publicity of the public meetings which are held every two months. We produce a monthly e-brief which goes to local organisations and we will be producing a newsletter available to the public from June 2007.
