About the Area

The Action Area incorporates most of the City Centre and an area immediately to the south west reaching as far as Hallam Head and Ranmoor in the west and Carterknowle Road and Queens Road in the south.  It is divided by the A625 Ecclesall Road as it runs up to Hunters Bar. The area encompasses all of the Nether Edge Ward, substantial parts of the Broomhill and Central wards and small sections of the Fulwood and Ecclesall Wards

Home to around 50,773 people in 18,979 households. The diversity of the area marks it out for particular note.  Within its boundaries lie some of the richest and poorest areas in Sheffield and its population is the most culturally mixed in the city.

Sharrow, Broomhall, Broomhill and Nether Edge all have their share of Victorian mansions and were once the leafy suburbs of their day. This affluence still remains in parts of the area to the west.  Nearer to the inner City there lives a more transitory population that occupies a diverse range of housing from older terraces to state of the art City Centre living

Amongst the dense urbanisation lie various and developing campuses of both universities and a number of the city’s hospitals.  Servicing this and a wider population is a large array of shops running in ribbons along the corridors that diverge on the city centre.

Important parts of the city’s heritage have a home here.  The General Cemetery (now no longer used for burials) is the resting place of many of the city’s Steel Barons, the Botanical Gardens (nearly now restored) and Sheffield United Football Club, with its long history of community involvement.  The importance of the Area to the heritage of the City is marked by the number of neighbourhoods within the Area now designated as conservation areas

Uniquely this Action Area takes in the City Centre, which is changing and developing constantly, with, most significantly, the emergence of city centre living, which is making a major impact on the feel, and appearance of the area.

Broomhill, Central and Nether Edge enjoys great social, cultural and ethnic diversity making it a vibrant and interesting place to be.  The two universities contribute much to the vigour of the area, which accommodates very large numbers of students, a fact reflected in the population profile of the Area, which shows a higher proportion of people, aged 18 – 25yrs than other parts of Sheffield.
