Area Action
Background information
Sheffield introduced Area Action in 1995 to improve links between local communities, the Council and other agencies in order to improve services and tackle local issues.
Sheffield has twelve Area Panels, which between them cover the whole city and involve all 84 City councillors. These Area Panels are each served by an Area Action team of two officers – an Area Co-ordinator and an Area Action Officer.
Area Panels are a key part of the Council’s commitment to work in partnership to create successful neighbourhoods, they specifically aim to:
- Increase the local voice – Each panel holds regular public meetings that debate and inform action on local priorities. Active relationships are developed with local community groups
- Improve local service – There are established networks of link officers (from a wide variety of services including those provided by the Police and Health Authority) who are engaged in joint working and improving service delivery at the local level. Area plans are produced that outline area needs, priorities and actions to address issues.
- Support local regeneration - Joint working with local organisations and regeneration initiatives has been developed to co-ordinate activities to regenerate local communities. There has been considerable investment of resources by Area Working in helping to strengthen the ability of local organisations to improve their communities.
