Reduce Your Waste

Every year the amount of rubbish we produce increases.  Throwing away our rubbish puts pressure on the environment and on local authority disposal costs.  The problem of what to do with the waste we produce is worldwide but the people of Sheffield can make a difference through their own actions.

Home Composting

By composting there is less waste to be disposed of by the local authority and you are providing yourself with a valuable product for your own garden which you do not need to buy.  For advice on composting if you don’t know how to, then just use the links to the following sites for valuable information.

This link is to the Community Composting Network website which supports and promotes the community management and use of waste bio-degradable resources and is based in Sheffield.

This link to the Waste online website gives you all the ins and outs of composting.

This link to the Ryton Organic Gardens website will not only give you information on composting but also how to garden organically.

Compost bins for Sheffield residents are available at the discounted prices of £17 for a 220 litre bin and £20 for a 360 litre bin.  For more information and to order please go to the RecycleNow website.

Real Nappies

Disposable nappies cannot be recycled.  You can reduce the amount of waste put into your bin by using real nappies instead of the expensive disposable ones.  For a young family the disposable nappies take up a lot of room in the bin and are not environmentally friendly.  The new type of real nappies are not the chore which they used to be – no more pins for one thing!

For more information check out the Real Nappy website.

And for information regarding the use of nappies within the Sheffield area the following link to the Sheffield Real Nappy Network is useful.

New Offer

Sheffield City Council in association with the Sheffield Real Nappy Network are allowing a £10 contribution towards the purchase of Real Nappies.  For more details see Real Nappy Offer.

Community Group Waste Exchange

Search the Why Waste website to source materials for your group’s activities.  You can also advertise your own waste and help other groups save precious funds.
