Household Waste Recycling Centres

signs at the Household Waste Recycling Centres
There are five Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) in Sheffield. These are provided for Sheffield residents to dispose of household waste from their own home such as bulky items, garden waste, electrical or electronic equipment, furniture and lots more. Residents carrying out renovation or construction waste should hire a skip rather than take this to a HWRC.
Residents wishing to visit a HWRC using a van or with a trailer will need a permit or permission for a one off visit before being allowed on site. More information about the vehicle permit scheme is provided below.

Opening Hours:

Summer (April - September): 8:00am - 7:30pm
Winter (October - March): 8:00am - 5:30pm
(please note the opening times adjust on the weekend when the clocks are altered)

Sites are open every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

Site Locations:

When at the recycling centres please follow the instructions of the site supervisors who will direct you to the correct container for your waste.

Try to time your visit for a weekday morning to avoid the busiest periods. Weekends, afternoons and Bank Holidays can be very busy so you may experience delays.

Vehicle Permit Scheme

A vehicle permit scheme was introduced to all five of Sheffield’s HWRCs in January 2010 to prevent the illegal disposal of trade waste.
If you are a resident of Sheffield and you wish to visit a HWRC with a van or a trailer, you will need either a permit or approval for a one-off visit. Luton box vans, pick ups (excluding 4x4s), long wheel base transit vans and twin axled vehicles are not allowed on site and a permit is not available for vehicles of this type.
Residents wishing to visit a HWRC in a car, people carrier or a 4x4 without a pickup, do not need a permit to access a site.

How to apply for a permit:

If the only vehicle in your household is a van or you wish to bring a trailer on site, you can apply for a permit. It’s easy to apply for a permit, just contact Veolia Environmental Services .  If your application is successful, you will receive a permit for 12 visits to your nominated site. Each household is entitled to a maximum of 12 visits per year.

To apply call: 0114 273 4567 or email: sheffieldenquiries@veolia.co.uk

A leaflet with full details of the scheme can be downloaded from the Veolia website.

How to apply for a one-off visit:

If your van is not the only form of transport in your household or if you wish to visit a site with a van that is not registered to your address, you can apply for a one-off visit. It’s easy to apply for a one-off visit, just call Veolia Environmental Services and provide your name, address, vehicle details and waste type. One-off visits are provided for those occasions, such as house moves where you have more waste than your can fit in your car.

Trade Waste:

Sheffield’s five HWRCs are for household waste only and cannot accept trade waste. Trade waste must be disposed of using a licensed facility meeting Duty of care requirements. Depositing trade waste at a HWRC is a criminal offence under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and could result in a £50,000 fine and/or two years imprisonment.
