Our Performance with Waste

We have set targets for how we deal with the City's household waste.

Targets

Below are the key targets (Performance Indicators - PIs) which the Government uses to compare authorities throughout the country.  The PIs for recycling show a trend upwards, whilst the percentage of waste to landfill has been decreasing, although this year we have landfilled slightly more than we would have liked due to unforeseen problems at the Energy from Waste Plant (EfW) which have now been rectified.

The Council had been set a recycling / composting target by the Government of 20% to be achieved by March 2008 and we have recycled / composted just over 27% and this amounts to 63,708 tonnes of materials.  We are still looking at how we might be able to recycle more over the coming years.

At the Energy from Waste plant (EfW) a large amount of waste is turned into useable energy.  This, together with recycling means that almost 85% of domestic waste is re-used.

We also recycle cans recovered from the EfW plant but the Government does not allow us to count these against our target.  This totalled some 4,133 tonnes from the household waste in 2007-08 and would have raised the recycling performance to just over 29%.

In 2007-08 the total household waste collected (including bin, kerbside, recycling centres, bring-bank and street cleaning) in Sheffield was 233,780 tonnes.  The Council will be working to encourage residents to reduce the amount of waste being collected in the year 2008-09 and it is expected that 226,300 tonnes will be collected of which:

63,463 tonnes will be recycled & composted (28%)
130,638 tonnes will be for Energy Recovery (58%)
32,229 tonnes will be landfilled (14%)

New National Indicators - Targets

The Government have now changed the targets we have to achieve.  We must aim to reduce the amount of waste produced per household, increase the amount recycled and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.  Below shows the new indicators and the levels we are aiming for.

The European Landfill Directive requires the Country to divert biodegradable waste from landfill sites.  Rotting rubbish in tips creates methane which is a powerful greenhouse gas and contributes to global warming.  Dealing with waste growth and having a balanced waste policy including energy recovery and recycling helps the City to contribute to meeting this national requirement.

Since the 1980’s the City has invested in a major resource for the City, its District Heating Scheme.  This scheme utilises the heat generated by the Energy from Waste plant.  There are 43 kilometres of pipes buried in the City that transports 120,000 Mega Watt hours per year of heat to various buildings in the city.

Energy recovery is an integral part of utilising the energy resource locked up in waste.  The Energy from Waste plant also generates electricity which is fed into the National Grid.
