Bin Collection Frequently Asked Questions

Veolia Refuse Collection Crew
This section of our website covers some of the most frequently asked questions (FAQs) about bin collections.

Q.  What should I do if my bin hasn’t been emptied on my regular collection day?

A.  Call the Veolia customer services team on 0114 273 4567 after 4.30pm on the day of your collection or the following day to arrange for your bin to be emptied or to discuss the reasons why your bin has not been emptied and what action you may need to take.

Q.  How can I get a replacement wheeled bin – mine is damaged/has disappeared?

A. Please call the Veolia customer services team on 0114 273 4567 and they will make arrangements to repair or replace your bin.

Q.  Is there a charge for a replacement bin?

A. If a replacement bin is required for genuine purposes there will be no charge.

Q.  I don’t know what day my bin is emptied.  Can you help?

A. Please use the Veolia search facility or call them on 0114 273 4567.

Q.  Will my bin be emptied on bank holidays?

A.  A full refuse collection service is provided on Bank Holidays except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day.  Alternative dates will be published at the time in the local press. If your property is affected you will have a sticker affixed to your bin showing collection details over the holiday period.

Q. Can I have a second bin for my general household waste?

A.  No, we can only provide one black container for general household waste.  If you are having problems and are producing more waste than will fit into your bin you may be eligible for a larger bin.  (Please see the page regarding bin sizes

Q. How do I know if my bin is too heavy?  Why won’t it be collected it if it is too heavy?

A. If your bin is too heavy it will be difficult to move. It is likely that you have placed items other than domestic waste in the container, such as bricks, tiles, rubble, garden waste etc. If this is the case we would request that you remove some of the contents and use the Household Waste Recycling Centres for any additional waste that you have.  Collection will not be made until the following week. Try to recycle as much of your waste as possible to minimise the waste in your black bin.

If the bin is too heavy it will not emptied because it is a health and safety risk to the collection crews and the public. It could also damage the lifting equipment on the vehicles.

Q. Other people are using my bin, what can I do?

A. We do not have any power to intervene in matters like this.  However to minimise the opportunity for others to use your bin, we would recommend placing your bin out of sight bringing it out for collection as close as possible to the time of collection.

Q. I have noticed an abandoned wheeled bin on the roadside, what should I do?

A. Call 0114 273 4567 to contact the Veolia customer services team who will arrange for it to be removed.

Q. My neighbour leaves his bin out all the time what can I do?

A. Please report it on 0114 273 4567 or  email the Waste Management Section at wastemanagement@sheffield.gov.uk and we will investigate and write to households where bins are left on the pavement.  We may then pursue enforcement action which can include the use of a Fixed Penalty Notice for £100.
