Britain in Bloom

Peace Gardens Flower Display
Organised by the Royal Horticultural Society, Britain in Bloom is the largest horticultural campaign in Europe and only winners of the Regional competitions can enter.

The judging criteria of the awards covers environmental issues and community involvement, in addition to the cleanliness of the city and standard of floral displays, permanent planting and landscaping.

Sheffield has entered Britain in Bloom again this year as Yorkshire's representative.

The judges have already visited the city in the spring and will be visiting again on Thursday 14th August 2008 for the summer judging.

A copy of the Britain in Bloom brochure is available to download at the bottom of the page.

The judges will tour of the city to look at how we meet the judging criteria.  The criteria cover many aspects of the city including:-

  • Landscape and Floral Provision by the City Council
  • Businesses
  • Voluntary Organisations
  • Community Groups
  • Schools
  • Environmental Initiatives
  • Recycling
  • Litter
  • The City's Public Areas

Sheffield most recently went through to Britain in Bloom in 2004

Beating high quality entries from across the country, Sheffield achieved multiple successes in the competition, taking three awards overall:-

Gold Award

Overall winner of the New Permanent Landscape Feature.  This was awarded for the Peace Gardens and recognises the mix of planting and design and the use made of the Peace Gardens by the local community.

Gold Award

Overall winner of the Local Heritage Award.  This was given for the links made between the city’s green and industrial heritage, epitomised by the ‘Steel Man’ sculpture.

Silver Gilt Award

Sheffield was presented with one of only 16 Silver Gilt Awards made by the judges across all categories of entrants and narrowly missed out on being made the overall winner of the Large City category.

As a result of Sheffield’s success in Britain In Bloom 2005, the city was chosen along with St Ives as the only two British localities to represent the United Kingdom in the 2005 Europe in Bloom competition, Entente Florale.
