Filthy Premises
There are real problems with people dumping rubbish (fly tipping) on land owned by the Council and elsewhere.
If the rubbish is on private land, or if you do not know who owns the land, you can report it to us at Environmental Services. We will find out who the land owner is and take action to deal with the problem. If the Council is the owner, we will make sure that the rubbish is quickly removed. If the land is privately owned we will contact the owners and take legal steps to get the rubbish removed, although this may take a little longer.
If you want to report littering you should contact Street Force, the service responsible for cleaning the streets and the provision of litter bins. If an area is particularly bad we may decide to send out our Environmental Enforcement Officers to patrol the area. There is a potential £75 instant penalty for dropping litter and we will issue penalties to people caught dropping litter. Where people do not pay fines we will take them to Court.
Businesses have a "Duty of Care" to make sure that they deal with rubbish generated by them properly. Where problems are caused by business activity we work with the Government Environment Agency to enforce these rules.
If you have any information about who may be responsible for dumping we would like to hear from you. Although we need witnesses to proceed to court, you can pass on information anonymously, which might help us to catch someone.
