Skin Piercing
Skin-piercing activities such as tattooing and body-piercing are popular across a wide cross section of the population.
There are health risks to persons having this activity undertaken particularly if control measures at studios are inadequate. Poor cleanliness of premises, lack of proper consent procedures or inadequate cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation of equipment can lead to cases of infection or other health problems. Our codes of practice which provide advice on safe methods of skin-piercing can be downloaded below. Also further information on skin-piercing can be obtained from danaid. (Please note Sheffield City Council has no control over the content of this website).
An information leaflet about body piercing has been produced jointly by danaid, Sheffield City Council and a local body art specialist. This leaflet is linked to a campaign to strengthen the legislation governing body piercing and improve general awareness of the risks of body piercing. This is available to download below.
We register all businesses and operators undertaking tattooing, cosmetic piercing (includes body piercing and ear piercing), semi-permanent skin-colouring, electrolysis and acupuncture. An application form for businesses and additional operators to existing registered businesses can be downloaded below. As part of the registration process we will inspect premises to ensure that they comply with the Sheffield City Council Bye Laws which can be downloaded below.
The current registration charge is £250 for the premises and £50 for the operator.
