Legionnaires Disease
Legionnaires disease is a potentially fatal form of pneumonia caused by breathing in water aerosols containing the bacteria legionella pneumophila. For businesses cases of the disease have been linked to wet cooling towers, showers, whirlpool spas, Jacuzzis and other water sources where aerosols are generated. To adequately control the risks it is important to follow the advice in the Approved Code of Practice document L8 “Legionnaires disease-The control of legionella bacteria in water systems"

Cooling Towers
The Notification of Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condenser Regulations 1992 were introduced due to a number of serious outbreaks of legionnaires disease linked to cooling towers. The regulations require all occupiers of buildings which have wet cooling towers or evaporative condensers to notify the local authority of the installation of this equipment.
