The Sheffield Healthy Choices Award

This is a city wide recognised award given to caterers who provide healthier food choices to promote healthy eating.  All types of catering establishments are eligible to apply for the Sheffield Healthy Choices Award – pubs, hotels, restaurants, takeaways, canteens, sandwich shops, schools and hospitals etc.

The award was developed by the Food in Sheffield (5 a day) Programme, Sheffield NHS Primary Care Trust, Sheffield Wildlife Trust, Heeley City Farm and us working in partnership.

Who are the award holders?

A list of Sheffield award holders is available on the Scores on the Doors website.  It can be accessed by searching on the "Rating/Score" field for Healthy Choices Award.

How can I get the Sheffield Healthy Choices Award?

The award consists of two strands: Food Safety and Healthy Eating, with 3 optional strands of Breastfeeding Friendly, Sourcing Food Locally and Fair-trade. To achieve the Sheffield Healthy Choices Award establishments must achieve 3 or more stars in our ‘Scores on the Doors’ scheme.

Caterers can take many steps to provide healthier food choices for their customers for example by expanding the availability of healthier choices, e.g. offering a choice of potatoes as alternatives to chips, lower fat fruit based desserts and different breads for sandwiches. Also by adopting healthier food preparation, cooking and serving practices, e.g. by trimming fat from meat before cooking, reducing the amount of fat used in cooking, and allowing customers to add as much or as little as they wish of sauces, dressings and fat spreads.

Optional Criteria:

Breastfeeding Friendly

Establishments are encouraged to adopt a policy of welcoming breastfeeding mothers. Breastfeeding is proven to have positive impact on health and well being in childhood and later life. If you would like to know more about the benefits of breastfeeding, please visit the UK Baby Friendly UNICEF site.

Sourcing Food Locally

By sourcing food locally, you can reduce the environmental impact of your establishment. Agriculture and food now account for nearly 30% of goods transported on our roads. This travel adds substantially to the carbon dioxide emissions that are contributing to climate change.

Fair-trade

Establishments are encouraged to support Fair-trade initiatives. Products carrying the Fairtrade Mark guarantee that disadvantaged farmers and workers in developing countries have been paid a fair price that covers the cost of sustainable production and living. For more information about the FAIRTRADE Mark, please access the Fair-trade Foundation website.
