Drainage

We undertake the Council's role as the Land Drainage Authority for ordinary watercourses and for land drainage matters, including development control.
 
We also provide a general advisory service to the public on drainage matters and hold copies of watercourse maps and Yorkshire Water's public sewer records, which the public can view at our office.
 
Please note we have no responsibility for the following:
 
  • Highway Drainage
        For highway drainage matters, including blocked road gullies, please contact
        Street Force by telephone on (0114) 2734567.
 
  • Main Rivers
        Matters relating to main rivers are the responsibility of the Environment Agency and
        they can be contacted by telephone on (08708) 506506.
 
  • Pollution
        Pollution of watercourses should be reported to the Environment Agency via
        telephone on (08708) 506506.
 
  • Private Drains
        Drainage systems within the curtilage of properties built after 1937 are normally
        private drains and the owner/occupier will need to engage a drainage contractor to
        rectify any problems.
 
        For matters relating to a nuisance caused by private drains please contact the
        Council's Environmental Services Department by telephone on (0114) 2037410.
 
  • Public Sewers
        Public Sewers are the responbility of Yorkshire Water. They can be contacted by
        telephone on (0845) 1242429. Drainage systems within the curtilage of properties
        built before 1937 are also, generally, classed as public sewers.
 
  • Water Supply
        For matters relating to water supply please contact Yorkshire Water by telephone
        on (0845) 1242424.
