Local Climate Impact Profile
Climate change predictions show that episodes of extreme weather will be more frequent in the future. The Local Climate Impact Profile (LCLIP) provides a summary of the effects so far of extreme weather on the city of Sheffield. This helps us to identify what steps we need to take to reduce the impacts of such events and to be better prepared for those impacts we can’t avoid. Download the full report from the bottom of this page.
Extreme weather events include:
- Intense rainfall
- Flooding
- Gales – strong winds and lightning
- Heatwaves
- Drought
- Snow and ice
The weather station at Weston Park Museum has records for more than 125 years. This data shows that Sheffield’s climate has been changing, particularly since around 1990.
A wide range of council and city partner services in the city provided details of their experiences of dealing with extreme weather impacts and considered:
- how much the city has been affected
- how the city has coped during these occasions
- what has changed as a result of these experiences
- what issues still need to be considered
To help with the LCLIP, Sheffield newspaper records were used to compile a list of extreme weather events for the last 10 years. Download the Sheffield Weather Timeline from the bottom of the page and see how many of the events you remember! Let us know about your experiences of these events by emailing environmentalstrategy@sheffield.gov.uk with your observations and memories.
The LCLIP is the start of the process to assess future risks from climate change and consider the range of adaptation options available to us.
