What do we do?
As a team we:
- Promote inclusion of children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) within mainstream schools and ensure that they are enabled to fulfil their potential.
- Provide support for families and carers.
- Raise awareness within schools and communities.
- Work closely with all other agencies.
How do we do it?
- By observing pupils within their educational settings as part of their Ryegate assessment.
- By early diagnosis and assessment (Combined Clinic)
- We work in Footsteps Nursery, which is a specialist group for children with ASD. Children usually attend between two and four sessions per week. The group is run jointly between our team and Child Health. The aim is to provide early intervention and introduce children to specialist teaching strategies.
- We offer advice and support to parents
- We work with schools to assess pupils and set targets that will increase the level of inclusion.
- We advise schools on strategies that aid inclusion such as TEACCH, PECS, other visual strategies, focussed language work, focussed literacy/numeracy work, social skills groups, social stories and behaviour management.
- We work with schools to ensure on transition between schools, key stage or class.
- We provide training to schools, nurseries, health professionals and other settings about ASD.
