Information for Parents / Carers
Our parents and carers say:
“ My child will be sad to leave”
“ It’s nice to get the good news as well as the bad”
“ I feel the centre did all it could for my child”
What is the Primary Inclusion Centre?
The Primary Inclusion Centre is not a school; it is a pupil referral unit. This means that children are referred to us for assessment and help. We are inspected by Ofsted, in the same way as schools.
Our Aims
1. To provide a safe and secure place for children to be.2. To engage children in learning.3. To help children to learn the social and emotional skills they needto be part of a school community.4. To encourage children to develop their own interests in the world aboutthem.5. To teach them to be independent learners.
What do the children learn?
Your child will learn English and maths in the same way as they do at school. We put an emphasis on teaching children these basic skills because it will help them to settle down in lessons when they go back to school. If your child is due to take SATs they will be able to do them at the centre and you will be told the results.
The other subjects we teach are chosen to help each child with their own difficulties or to develop their interests. The children do a lot of personal, social and health education and citizenship. We give each child special help with their behaviour. We know the children won’t be perfect straight away but we do expect them to try very hard to improve their behaviour.
Younger Children
Children who are between 5 and 8 years old are taught in our ‘Sunflower Room’. This is a nurture group, which gives younger children lots of opportunities to learn how to play and share, as well as to do English and maths.
Lunch
Children who have free school meals are provided with a healthy cold lunch of sandwiches, salad and fruit, with squash or water. Unfortunately we do not have the facilities for hot lunches. Children can bring their own healthy cold lunch. Still drinks and biscuits can be brought, but no fizzy drinks, chocolate or sweets.
Religious Education (RE) and Worship
Sex and Relationships Education (SRE)
We provide teaching of religious education in accordance with Sheffield’s agreed syllabus. We have acts of collective worship at the centre on special days. We also provide sex and relationships education, appropriate for primary age children.
If you wish to withdraw your child from SRE, RE or worship please inform us in writing. If you would like to see the content of SRE, RE or worship please let a member of staff know.
Physical Education (PE)
All children who are with us full-time have at least 2 hours of PE a week. They will need pumps or trainers. Older children also sometimes have the opportunity to go swimming.
Special Educational Needs (SEN)
All children who attend the centre have SEN. Our policy is to work with parents/carers in setting Individual Education Plans for pupils every half term. We ensure that we meet the requirements of the Code of Practice.
Equal Opportunities
We have an agreed Race Equality Policy and action plan. We monitor and report its implementation and impact. We are working to improve the accessibility of the service. All documents are available in large print.
Transport
A taxi or minibus is provided for your child. Good behaviour is expected at all times - no eating or drinking!
Queries or Complaints
Please contact Mr Longson or Mr Giles (telephone 0114 2557679) who are always available to discuss children’s progress or any concerns.
