Transforming Learning Strategy for Sheffield

Developing a Transforming Learning Strategy for Sheffield

How can we better prepare students for a changing world?

According to a number of eminent observers, such as pragmatic futurologist Ray Kurzweil, there will be 1000 times more technological change in the 21st century than there was in the 20th century.

What does this mean for students and employers in preparing for the future?

By the time the current pupils in our primary school become full adults, there will be no significant numbers of jobs left in the UK that couldn’t be done more cheaply overseas or where human labour could be replaced by technology. Portfolio careers will be the norm with a typical working life consisting of 5 or 6 phases, include several periods of self-employment, and spanning several different industries. All jobs will be mediated by information and networked technologies, as will the whole of life. ICT will surround us and it will be how creatively we use it and the information and connectivity it gives us that will determine the value we can create and the incomes we can generate.

The government are promoting an innovative approach to learning and the use of ICT by Personalisation.

All pupils have an individually customised educational programme based on their abilities and needs. A learning profile is developed for each student, from which individual goals are set. Core subjects (e.g. Maths, English, Swedish and Modern Languages) are organised on a ‘ladder’ basis, which enables students to develop proficiencies from their qualifications. All other subjects are organised in integrated thematic programmes and projects and delivered through problem-based learning.

Sheffield is using Building Schools for the Future (BSF) as a vehicle for transformation of buildings and school organisation.

BSF will enable:

  • Transformation of facilities and resources to enable new ways of working.
  • Extend provision to the whole community through learning facilities and use of ICT.
  • Enable new courses and qualifications to be offered.

What about Non-BSF?

  • Many changes can still happen with organisational change, i.e. timetable, better use of data, and changes to pedagogy. Leadership that promotes Personalisation and focuses on individual performance through tracking and monitoring and the development of a Learners Charter to provide the best for all learners.
