Medical Outreach Teaching
What do we provide?
The Service provides education for pupils who are not in hospital, but are unable to attend school for medical reasons. These pupils have a statutory entitlement to alternative provision. We aim to maintain continuity between learning in school, in hospital, at home and on return to school.
To achieve this aim, the Service:
- has a team of experienced, qualified teachers, whom we deploy to meet the needs of pupils.
- allocates 5 hours teaching per week to most pupils, depending on their needs and their condition.
- works with the home school, which retains responsibility for the child’s overall education and welfare, and determines the curriculum followed. (in line with DfES Guidance).
- maintains contact with the school in order to plan work and inform the school of progress made.
- works closely with colleagues from the hospital sector, health service personnel and other agencies in support of the child.
- holds regular review meetings to ensure that the best possible provision can be made.
Where do we teach?
Our teachers pay particular attention to those areas of education that parents, pupils and the home school feel need most support, while maintaining as far as possible entitlement to the National Curriculum.
Teaching is provided
- in the home,
- in school,
- at the Standhouse Centre or
- in other suitable accommodation.
We make arrangements when necessary for GCSE and other exams to be taken out of school.
What happens when a pupil recovers from illness or injury?
We aim to facilitate successful reintegration to school, or into Post 16 provision, when pupils’ medical conditions allow this. We work with the home school in order for this to happen successfully.
