Sessional settings are playgroups or pre-school nursery groups that offer morning or afternoon care lasting less than 4 hours continuously in a day. Some sessional groups provide both morning and afternoon sessions (these include nursery classes in schools). Information regarding places at settings eligible to provide nursery education is also supplied in the audit. All 3 and 4 year olds (from the term after a child’s third birthday) are currently entitled to 5 free 2½-hour sessions per week for a minimum of 38 weeks per year. Free places can be delivered by a variety of providers in the private, voluntary, independent or maintained sectors including registered childminders.
