Sheffield Childcare Audit - an overview
Sheffield’s annual childcare audit provides an overall picture of the supply of childcare across the city. The audit does not however indicate where demand for childcare exceeds supply but gives a baseline position from which future performance can be measured.
The audit is a ‘snapshot’ of childcare provision in Sheffield and places available within the Sheffield Metropolitan District Boundary in September 2008. The Early Years Education & Childcare Service (EYECS) receives data of childcare provision from a number of sources. This audit is based on the most up-to-date information available to EYECS in September 2008. Due to new places opening and existing places closing, the number of childcare and early education settings and places available fluctuates throughout the year. The data is based on Service District boundaries and is broken down into the natural communities identified as Children’s Centre Reach Areas for targeting local area delivery of children and family services through the Children’s Centre Initiative.
In “Choice for Parents, the Best Start for Children: a Ten Year Strategy for Childcare” the Government outlined its long term vision for childcare provision which better meets the needs of working parents.
An audit has been published for each of the 7 service districts of Sheffield as well as a citywide audit.
