Inclusion (Reducing Exclusions) Project
National/Local Strategies to Reduce Exclusions
The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) are now developing a forward looking strategy to address the underlying causes of disproportionate exclusions. This includes the DCSF National Strategies, working with 15 local authorities and schools with a high proportion of Black Caribbean and Mixed White and Black Caribbean pupils, helping them to take a key role in developing suitable strategic intervention and actions that will target this issue; this will include support for school leaders and staff to equip them with the knowledge and understanding to provide an effective learning environment for these pupils.
The Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS) Inclusion (Reducing Exclusions) Project uses a ‘holistic’ intervention programme for pupils identified as being at risk of exclusion called - 'Building Resilience for Educational Success'. The aim is to:
- Develop the pupils awareness of some of the key drivers of disproportionate Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) exclusions; and the role played by school, pupils and community,
- The benefits of education
- The social construction of race
- Classroom interactions.
Some of the key activities in the intervention which supports pupils directly, might include 1-1 mentoring, establishing a parental feedback loop and group-work. It is crucial to point out to anyone wanting to either duplicate, mainstream or just understand this work that there are 6 priority areas for achieving success:
- Weekly individual behaviour data
- Trusting relationships
- Motivations and aspirations
- Peer group ideology
- Relationships with teaching staff
- Parents
The following secondary schools are participating in the Inclusion (reducing exclusions)pilot and can download documents to help them with the project :
- Firth Park

- King Edward V11,
- Parkwood High
- Tapton
