Gateway Refugee Resettlement Programme

This is a programme run by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees in conjunction with the UK government.  Sheffield City Council was one of the first Local Authorities to join the Gateway programme in April 2004 taking a cohort of Liberian families.

In the last 3 years Sheffield has taken three cohorts of Burmese and Karen families. In each academic year approximately thirty children were admitted into schools and received support from interpreters and tutors.

The Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS) role is to work collaboratively with the Refugee Council and other partners.  It admits children into schools, supports and develops the support staff, develops parental engagement with the partner schools, assesses and evaluates individual pupil progress and ensures that the children make the maximum progress in relation to all five Every Child Matters outcomes.
