What is an Educational Psychologist?
We are psychology graduates who have successfully completed further training for post-graduate professional qualifications - a minimum of 7 years training in total - in order to become qualified Educational Psychologists. All of us have had experience in working with children and young people and their families, as well as with a range of other professional practitioners, including staff in Health and Social Care.
Many Educational Psychologists have additional qualifications and experience of working in schools, and some have worked in a range of social care settings. Our knowledge of psychology and brain research, child development and how children learn, social development, mental health and emotional well-being, and the psychology of managing change help us to support parents/carers, staff in educational settings and other professionals to promote children’s and young people’s development.
Nationally as well as locally, the balance of work for Educational Psychologists is increasingly shifting towards working with the key adults closely involved in children’s and young people’s lives – parents/carers and teaching staff - with perhaps less direct involvement with children and young people for routine, one-off assessment work. However, there may still be times when individual and small group work with learners is appropriate in getting to grips with complex needs, and in delivering support for prevention and early intervention work.
We are committed to providing a high quality service, working in close partnership with our families and taking account of the views of children and young people themselves. Educational Psychologists work according to agreed Codes of Conduct and Ethics, as laid down by the British Psychological Society and the Association of Educational Psychologists.
Some Educational Psychologists work full time and some are part-time – we work with local mainstream and specialist schools, units, Integrated Resources and Early Years Providers. The team consists of:
