e-Learning in Sheffield
What is e-learning?
The term 'e-learning' is defined as learning with the aid of information and communications technology (ICT) tools. These may include the Internet, intranets, computer-based technology, digital technology, mobile telephones or interactive television. e-learning may also include the use of e-technology to support traditional methods of learning, for example using electronic whiteboards or video conferencing.
e-learning is happening all over Sheffield, all over South Yorkshire, all over the country and all over the world. In fact, if you have access to ICT you have a doorway into a new exciting way of learning. Teachers, tutors, businesses, communities and individuals across South Yorkshire have all been taking advantage of the freedom that e-learning offers.
Why is e-learning beneficial?
Information and communication technologies are not only revolutionising teaching methods, they’re also giving students increased freedom to learn, helping disengaged students return to education or training and making real differences to the way that schools are being run. With digital technologies becoming an ever more pervasive part of both the lives of young people and the way business is done, it is vital that Sheffield continues to exploit the opportunities for learning and for relevant vocational experiences that e-learning offers.
Our experience in delivering the largest e-learning programme of its kind in Europe - the South Yorkshire e-Learning Programme - is that e-learning has a significant and measurable impact on improving student engagement and attainment, as well as giving people the ICT skills and confidence needed for employment. Teachers are using ICT to deliver learning in ways that are more stimulating and engaging. Teaching that works with the interests of young people and that encourages good working habits such as collaboration, communication and creativity are a necessity in a digital world.
