Kids Can Do Positive Activities 8-13

Forest School - Tree Play

What Do We Do?

Kids Can Do supports the development of positive outcomes for all young people aged 8-13 years in Sheffield.  The project funds the increased delivery of free, year round, out of school activities by supporting a diverse menu of things to do that are provided locally and across the city.  The Kids Can Do activity themes are:

  • playwork
  • sports & physical activity
  • culture & heritage
  • arts & crafts
  • music & creative media
  • environmental activities

For up to date information about current activities see AskSid

What Can We Offer?

The core principles for this project include:

  • offering a choice of activities for all young people aged 8-13 in Sheffield
  • ensuring there is provision in all areas of Sheffield, as well as city wide opportunities
  • activities are expected to be delivered throughout the year on weekdays, weekends and during school holidays
  • activity will be accessible to all young people
  • providers will clearly involve young people in the design, delivery and evaluation of the activity

What Do We Expect?

When we commission or support the provision we will test to see that that the activities are additional (i.e. we fund new activity or the extension of existing activity to new groups or at new times and we will not use the fund to subsidise or replace funding for existing activity).  We will also make sure activity is free to the young person.  Along with our service providers we commit to making the provision fun, and will work hard with the providers and will monitor provision to ensure that it is safe, inclusive, suitably staffed and of good quality.

In addition, the project seeks to encourage families and different generations to “have fun together”.  Finally by using the funding we expect there to be increased opportunities for the participation, engagement and skill development of volunteers.

How Will We Do It?

Through careful management and good partnership involvement, the project will make funding available throughout Sheffield.  We do this by commissioning a main programme of year round activity from a number of providers spread across the city.  We have identified part of the budget for small revenue grants to allow community based organisations to apply for smaller pots of funding to support activity in their neighbourhoods.

In addition, we are working with providers to develop their provision through supporting the way they involve young people in the planning and delivering of the activities and also through supporting organisations to work with and develop volunteers.  We also recognise that we need to be responsive, so we have some flexibility in the way we manage the budget to allow us to react to new needs and demands as they arise.
