Every Child Matters Consultation 2006

Excerpt from the artwork produced during a two day workshop
Between May and July 2006 the Children and Young People’s Directorate of the Sheffield City Council in partnership with Chilypep consulted with nearly 3,500 children and young people about their needs and priorities in relation to the Every Child Matters agenda:

  • Be Healthy
  • Staying Safe
  • Enjoy and Achieve
  • Positive Contribution
  • Economic Well-being

This agenda is set out by the national Government and relates to the achievement of better outcomes for children and young people through the delivery of all services.

Children and young people were consulted in schools and also through focus groups.  33 schools (25 primary, 6 secondary, 2 special), young people in post 16 learning and training within Longley Park 6th Form College and In Touch Care participated in the consultation.

The focus groups were arranged to find out the detail of the issues particular groups of children and young people have. Organisations with access to specific groups of children and young people (various council departments and Voluntary, Community & Faith organisations) ran the focus groups with the children and young people that the school consultation could not guarantee reaching.

This consultation aimed to discover which priorities for children and young people are the most important to address across the city as a whole or for some of the different groups and localities within the city.  This information has enabled us to set priorities for children and young people across Sheffield.

The findings from this consultation are below with analysis by Service District on the links to the left.

Following the consultation in schools, colleges and focus groups, a two-day workshop in August 2006 was organised. The workshops involved a wide range of young people who chose from a variety of art forms to express their views. These art forms included drama, rap, poetry, puppet making, dance and creative art. The workshops enabled young people to express their priorities through a variety of arts activities, culminating in performance. This is the artwork produced during the two-day workshop.  (385 KB)
