School Balances - Deficits or Surpluses
Often, setting a balanced budget can prove to be a difficult task for schools. The Local Authority recognises this and has set in place processes for assisting those schools that have not set or returned a balanced budget.
Accordingly, the downloadable documents below provide information on the processes involved in assisting schools with either Deficit Balances or large Surplus Balances.
Licensed Deficit Arrangements - please note the Authority's intervention strategy described in the document. It is important to stress the continuing engagement with the Authority of schools experiencing financial difficulties, in order to avoid such intervention wherever possible.
Large Surplus Balances - any amount in excess of the limit set by The Scheme for Financing Schools on the level of surplus balances a school can hold may potentially be clawed back where a school is unable to evidence the purpose for which the balances are held or if the reasons for keeping the balance do not meet the criteria set down. It is important, therefore, to ensure that the process is fully understood and adhered to.
