Schools Contingency Fund

The Purpose of the School Contingency Fund

Sheffield’s School Contingency Fund consists of a sum deducted annually from the delegated Individual Schools’ Budget (ISB), and retained centrally to be administered on behalf of schools by local authority officers. The sum set aside in this way is used to reimburse schools incurring expenditure of limited duration arising from emergencies, unusual circumstances, or administrative error.

Payments are normally limited to the relevant financial year, but in exceptional circumstances may be backdated by up to one additional year. Payments to schools from the Contingency Fund are limited by the level of funds set aside. Claims held to be eligible for payment, but unable to be paid owing to exhaustion of the Fund, are frozen and held for payment in the following financial year.

There are sixteen criteria which schools may use to make claims on the Contingency Fund.
