Instrument tuition
Sheffield Music Service (SMS) exists to provide and support opportunities for the young people in Sheffield schools. Our work enhances and enriches musical education within each school, according to need:
- Specialist teachers employed by Sheffield City Council provide the tuition.
- The lessons are provided within the normal school day.
- These take the form of a contractual arrangement that provides for thirty three periods of instrumental tuition per academic year.
- Tuition is normally given along the guidelines set by the SMS and the Federation of Music Services.
- Depending on ability and level, SMS recommend that no more than six young musicians should be taught in any one hour.
- Children usually begin to learn in groups of up to four. When they have reached a higher level of proficiency they may receive tuition in smaller groups depending on arrangements within the child's school.
- The majority of the young musicians parents/guardians are invoiced directly before the start of each term by the SMS using a well established billing system developed in-house.
- The SMS recoup tuition costs retrospectively from some schools on a termly basis. The current cost of our service to schools/parents is £28.44 per contact hour (2008/09).
The SMS does not keep lists and are not permitted to advise on appropriate private instrumental teachers in the Sheffield area.
