Sheffield Music Service
The Sheffield Music Service (SMS) Central Ensembles provides the opportunity for around 800 children to rehearse and perform together in over 20 ensembles ranging from post beginner groups to some of the most respected senior ensembles in the UK.
- Due to a massive increase in demand for the SMS, we are presently looking to increase our pool of instrumental teachers. For further information please contact the SMS on 0114 250 6860.
- Most of our teaching takes place in schools during normal lesson times for 33 weeks of the school year.
- Children from all over the city meet in the evening at the Bannerdale Centre to rehearse in one of our many orchestras, bands or choirs.
- The senior ensembles represent the city at many prestigious competitions and concert venues across Europe.
- SMS has a large stock of musical instruments which children and parents can hire for their SMS lesson.
- A programme of Wider Opportunities is presently being rolled out into 70 primary schools involving 1,900 children.
- Groups of SMS teachers visit schools to perform to pupils and to deliver workshops.
- The SMS has its own elementary examinations in music which is taken by 1000 pupils per year.
- SMS also provides evening music theory classes at the Bannerdale Centre in Sheffield. Tuition less than £4 per hour. Classes Monday / Thursday night for children and adults, for application forms call 0114 250 6860.
- An ensembles calendar is provided below as a downloadable document which details planned ensembles taking place in Sheffield during 2008/09.
