School Assemblies

Schools are required to provide a daily assembly for all pupils. The majority of these have to be of a "broadly Christian character", that is to say, "reflecting the broad traditions of Christian beliefs and values" (not worship practices).

These broad traditions and values are shared by most of the world's major religions and indeed society in general. Schools are encouraged to use materials from all the major faiths and also that which represents non-religious viewpoints.

The assembly is also very important in developing the community ethos, values and family life of the school and in developing care for each other and respect for all. Parents do, however, have the right to withdraw their child from assemblies.

For further information contact your child's school (full details can be found on the Schools List)  or contact the Children and Young People's Service Adviser for Religious Education: Telephone 0114 2930971 or email: cypdinformation@sheffield.gov.uk
