Improving the journey to school
This page describes the ways in which we plan to make journeys to school better for everyone.
To meet new duties under the Education and Inspections Act 2006 we have developed a strategy that aims to enable and encourage home to school journeys by ways other than the private car, for example walking, cycling and using public transport.
The strategy will do this by ensuring that parents and carers have information about travel and transport available when they are choosing a school.
We will also work with young people, parents and carers and schools to see how we can improve the journey to school and encourage environmentally sustainable travel.
Consultation
We would like to find out about your travel patterns and the reasons behind them so we’re asking you to take part in the getting to school consultation. You have until 5 December 2008 to put forward your views. We would also like to know what we can do to improve your journey to and from school. All comments and opinions will be taken into account and will help us to inform the development of Sheffield’s Home to School Travel Strategy.
The results of this consultation will be published on the Sheffield 0-19+ partnership website after February 2009 half-term. Check back to see what improvements we will be making as a result of your responses
Current strategy
At the moment our strategy is a draft, and the full and summary versions are available to download at the bottom of the page. The final strategy will be published after the results of the consultation are collated in February 2009.
The key objectives of our strategy are to:
- Reduce car use to reduce congestion and pollution
- Provide travel choice and ensure transport is not a barrier to educational choice and attainment
- Improve travel safety
- Improve the health of children and young people
- Raise awareness and promote environmentally sustainable travel
Have a look at our new interactive map to find your travel options.
