Improving the journey to school
This page describes the ways in which we plan to make journeys to school better for everyone.
To meet new duties under the Education and Inspections Act 2006 we have developed a strategy that aims to enable and encourage home to school journeys by ways other than the private car, for example walking, cycling and using public transport.
The strategy will do this by ensuring that parents and carers have information about travel and transport available when they are choosing a school.
We will also work with young people, parents and carers and schools to see how we can improve the journey to school and encourage environmentally sustainable travel.
Consultation
During November / December 2008 we consulted children and young people on getting to school. Young people were consulted via an online questionnaire and through the Every Child Matters questionnaire and focus groups. The purpose of the consultation was to find out about young people's travel patterns and the reasons behind them. The results of the online questionnaire are available on the Sheffield 0-19+ Partnership website. A summary of the full consultation findings is available at the bottom of the page.
Current strategy
The full and summary versions of our Strategy are available to download at the bottom of the page.
The key objectives of our strategy are to:
- Reduce car use to reduce congestion and pollution
- Provide travel choice and ensure transport is not a barrier to educational choice and attainment
- Improve travel safety
- Improve the health of children and young people
- Raise awareness and promote environmentally sustainable travel
