Family Learning

Family Learning provides and promotes learning within an intergenerational, family or kinship network context.

Family Learning is free, inclusive and is offered with open access, additional learner support and childcare. It recognises and values diversity of culture, race, relationships and beliefs.

Achievements within family learning benefit parents and carers, their children, the schools and children’s organisations and the wider community through promoting change and empowering individuals and communities.

The Lifelong Learning and Skills Service offers a wide range of learning opportunities, encouraging parents and carers to:

  • participate in learning activities with and for their children
  • understand how their children are learning in school and learn how best to support them
  • increase their own confidence and self-esteem through life-long learning
  • raise awareness of the use and importance of literacy, numeracy and ICT in everyday life

The Family Learning team delivers in both school and non-school based settings, libraries, community venues:

  • Family Literacy, Numeracy and ICT short courses and workshops, offering practical and enjoyable adult learning
  • Longer, more formal but fun, Family Learning courses, including joint sessions with their children, with OCN accreditation
  • New ICT and Child Health courses with opportunities to brush up adult literacy and numeracy skills
  • Excellent training and professional development opportunities for adult tutors, school teachers, librarians and Early Years workers.
