Home to School Transport

Currently pupils are entitled to a free bus pass allowing them to travel to and from school free of charge if they meet the following criteria:

  •  are under 8 years old, attend the catchment school and live more than 2 miles from  the school by the most direct walking route.

  •  are 8 years old or over the same rules apply except you must live more than 3 miles from the school.

  • If the child attends a denominational school within Sheffield, is of that faith and satisfies the distance criteria.

The Education and Inspections Act 2006 introduced changes to help low income families apply for a range of schools, by removing the barriers caused by the cost of transport.

The Act extends the right to a zero fare travel pass to children

  • who are entitled to free school meals or
  • whose parents are in receipt of their maximum level of Working Tax Credit

In the following circumstances:-

From September 2007 where parental income is classed as low, children aged between 8 and 11, are entitled to free travel where they live more that 2 miles from their nearest school.

From September 2008 where parental income is classed as low, children who are 11 or over are entitled to free travel to one of their three nearest secondary schools where it is over 2 miles but under 6 miles from where they live.

From September 2008 where parental income is classed as low, and the parent has expressed a preference for the nearest school, based on their religion or belief, where the distance between home and school is over 2 miles but less that 15 miles from that school.
