Milestone for School Lunch Standards

The School Food Trust has published the results of its Primary School Food Survey 2009. This national study, the first of its kind since the Government’s new standards for school lunch came into effect in 2006, has found that the lunches taken by primary school pupils in 2009 were healthier than those of children four years earlier.

Almost three quarters of pupils (74%) are now taking servings of vegetables and salad with their average school lunch, compared with 59% in 2005. On average, children in 2009 took more than two of their ‘5-a-day’ as part of their school lunch, eating an average of 1.6 portions of fruit and vegetables.

You can read the full summary of the Primary School Food Survey on the School Food Trust website.

Contract Services Renamed the School Food Service

Contract Services has been renamed The School Food Service. The name change follows a restructure resulting from additional responsibilities brought about by the Transforming School Food agenda and new transport and travel strategies

This has meant that the team within Contract Services with responsibility for nutritional standards in school food is changing from an education-based procurement team to a team focussed on the ‘Every Child Matters’ agenda regarding children and young people’s health, safety and well being

We will focus on two main areas:

Development & Compliance

  • Advice, support and challenge on nutritional standards for all schools.
  • Developing a whole school approach to school food as part of the Food In Schools Group.
  • Strategic and operational responsibility for the Council’s central catering contract arrangements on behalf of schools – the School Meals Subscription Service.
  • Premises compliance and investment in schools kitchens as part of the School Meals Subscription Service.

Service Support

  • All relevant aspects of budget monitoring, spending plans and contractual finance, including all contracts managed by the teams.
  • Responsibilities for Free School Meals Administration.
  • Information, data and benchmarking including annual reporting on National Indicator 52 (Take Up of Meals).
  • Contract procurement for Catering and Drinking Milk contracts, including development of the service in line with the Council’s ambition to be a Modern & Efficient organisation.
