Who is Eligible For Free School Meals?

 
Free school meals are a statutory benefit - this means that if you qualify you have a legal right to free school meals for your child(ren).
 
You are eligible for free school meals if your child(ren) are registered at a Sheffield School, the parent/carer receives child benefit for the child(ren) and the parent/carer receives one of the following benefits:
 
  • Income Support
  • Income Based Jobseekers Allowance
  • Child Tax Credit, but not receiving Working Tax Credit, and your annual income does not exceed £16,040.
 
You are not entitled to Free School Meals if you receive Working Tax Credit.

Where can I get a Free School Meals Application Form from?

 
A pink Free School Meals application form can be obtained from any of the following places: -
 
 
  • Schools.
 
  • Free School Meals Team - 0114 2735705 or 0114 2736401.
 
 
Or
 
  • By downloading a copy of the pink Free School Meals Application Form
 

How do I apply for Free School Meals?

 
Once you have a copy of the Free School Meals Application Form you will need to complete all the relevant sections. Please ensure you do this as quickly as possible to avoid a delay in your application.
 
When you have completed one copy of the application form for all your children and if you receive Income Support with no Child Tax Credit Payment, post the completed form to

For Child Tax Credit only attach a copy of your TC602 (pages 1 to 4 only) and post it to the Free School Meals team.
 

Top Tip

 
To speed up the authorisation, bring the pink free school meals application form and evidence that you are receiving job seekers allowance (income based / JSA (IB) ), Income Support (IS) or Child Tax Credit, to First Point at Howden House.   A temporary authorisation letter will be given, valid for 14 days from the date on the letter. This should be taken to the school.

Backdated Claims

 
If you do not claim free school meals when you first become eligible you may make a late claim and request a reimbursement for meals, backdated up to 26 weeks only, for which you have already paid by writing to the Free School Meals Team.
 

Review Period

 
We are required to review claims for free school meals every 12 months. When your application is reviewed we will write to you requesting evidence that you are still entitled to free school meals. It is important that you respond to this letter as your claim will be cancelled if you fail to provide the required documentation within 6 weeks.
 
You will be contacted a year from the date your application was received. If you think you have not had a review letter or wish to discuss your review letter please call the Free School Meals Team.
 

Change of Circumstances

 
Please advise us of any changes in your circumstances, for example should you move address you need to contact the Free School Meals Team to update your details. If you fail to do this, it could result in your claim being cancelled when it is reviewed.
 

Cancellation of Free School Meals

 
Should you wish to cancel your child's free school meals, you can do so at any time.
 
Parents, who cease to be in receipt of Income Support or Income-Based Jobseeker's Allowance, start to receive Working Tax Credit, or whose income goes above the £16,040 threshold, must cancel their entitlement to free meals immediately.
Any free meals provided after your entitlement ceases will be charged to parents.
