School Meals

Healthy Food Source
The School Food Service has responsibility for managing the school meals catering contract, the provision of free school meals administration and drinking milk. You will be able to find useful information such as: -

And you will also have the opportunity to leave feedback or ask us a question. In our You said we did section you can also see the actions we have taken in response to some of your questions and feedback.

We also advise schools on the statutory functions set by Government relating to these services ensuring they are being met across all schools in Sheffield.

To do this we give advice and support to schools and work alongside other partners like NHS Sheffield with the Sheffield Healthy Schools Programme, the School Food Trust, the Government organisation for bringing about improvements to school food, and health professionals to achieve national standards.

The scope of our service relates very closely to the aims and outcomes of the ‘Every Child Matters’ agenda where the well-being of children and young people from birth to age 19 is our main focus.

The examples below show how our service contributes to the Governments aim which is for every child, whatever their background or their circumstance, to have the support they need to:

  • Be healthy  - e.g. eating healthy food and making healthy choices.
  • Stay safe – developing ‘stay on site’ policies.
  • Enjoy and achieve – good healthy food means better behaviour and improved learning in the classroom.
  • Make a positive contribution – listen to and work with School Councils and consult with children and young people on services they want to see.
  • Achieve economic well-being – free school meals and free milk give children and young people access to nutritional food and drink, helping them to be ready to learn and achieve.

Following consultation with schools we have commissioned contracts for the provision of school meals since 2001.  In 2006, 142 schools chose to be part of this arrangement, and the contract for the provision of school meals was awarded by us to Chartwells.

Private Finance Initiative

At the present time, 46 schools in Sheffield work under different arrangements – some are part of a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contract arrangement, one school manages a private contract themselves and the rest of these 46 schools manage their own catering and employ the staff directly.
