Truancy sweeps

Sheffield Children and Young People's Service are fully committed to the national truancy sweep agenda. The staff in the Attendance Service and South Yorkshire Police work closely together in trying to combat truancy, condoned absence and youth crime. There are monthly truancy sweeps taking place across the City plus additional weeks of patrols which link in with the national strategy.

During a sweep every school-aged young person is stopped and their details taken. During the past twelve months almost 80% of young people stopped were with an adult, and approximately 45% of these did not have a justified resason for being absent from school. All young people stopped without a justified reason for absence are followed up by the Attendance and Inclusion Service. Some information from truancy sweeps is used as evidence in court proceedings against parents.
