Leaving school
The official school leaving date is always the last Friday in June of the academic year in which a young person will become 16.
Note: The last Friday in June in 2008 is Friday 27 June 2008.
This means that a young person:
- cannot start full-time work before the last Friday in June even if they are 16 and in Year 11 or would be in Year 11 if they were attending school.
- can start full-time work after the last Friday in June even though they may be 15, as long as they are 16 by 31 August of that same year
It is very important that the young person checks at school that they do not have examinations scheduled after the official leaving date.
