Applying for a school place

Application for a Reception School Place.

Applications for a place in Reception must be made by 31 January prior to the academic year when your child starts school.

The Council's Admission Policy makes provision for Reception children to begin full time education in September or January. Your child's start date is determined by the date of their fifth birthday as follows:

If a child’s 5th Birthday falls between 1 September - 28 (29) February the month of admission will be September.

If a child’s 5th Birthday falls between 1 March - 31 August the month of admission will be January.

In October prior to the academic year in which your child will begin school, application forms and booklets will be available. These can be obtained from primary schools and the Primary Admissions Team at the Children & Young People's Directorate (CYPD). You will be notified of the outcome of your application on 1 April.

Transfer to Junior (Y3)

Application packs will be sent to every child in a separate infant school in October, prior to the year of admission, via the infant school. Forms must be completed and returned to Primary Admissions by 30 November. Parents will be notified of their child's allocated school on 1 April. Pupils at a 'through' primary school may also express a preference for admission to Year 3 of any junior school although they would normally be expected to continue their education in the 'through' primary school. Forms can be obtained from Primary Admissions.

Transfer to Secondary School

Application packs are distributed to Y6 pupils in September prior to the year of admission.
Forms must be completed and returned to the Primary School before 20 October. The CYPD will notify parents of their child's allocated school on 1 March.

Online Applications

Sheffield CYPD is piloting an online application system. You may use this facility to apply for a Reception, Junior or Year 7 Secondary school place. If you would like to apply online look at Sheffield City Council's on-line application facility. Please note you are responsible for submitting any additional evidence to the Admissions Team to support your application.

Changes to Application process

Parents of pupils applying for a Reception, Junior or Year 7 Secondary school place are invited to express three preferences. You must rank your three preferred schools in the order of which you would most prefer your child to attend. The CYPD will make you a single offer of a school place. The CYPD cannot guarantee that the allocated school will be one of your three preferences. For more information about this process, please contact the Admissions Team. See below for contact details.

Mid-Year Transfers

If your child is already attending a primary or secondary school and you wish for him/her to transfer to another Sheffield school, you must obtain a transfer form from your child's existing school. The form must be completed by the current school and then sent to your preferred school for completion. If there is a place available, arrangements will be made for your child's admission. If the school is full in the relevant year group you will be contacted in writing to inform you of your appeal rights. You are advised to check whether a school has availability before you apply. The Admissions Team will be able to advise you where there are places available.

Children moving into the City

Families who are new to Sheffield, and have a school aged child, need to rregister their children with the Children Missing from Education Team. Once registered parents can apply for a school place. Applications forms can be obtained from the Pupil Admission Team. See below for contact details. Forms should be completed and sent to the preferred school. Please contact the Admissions Team to find out where there are places available.

General Information about Expressing a Preference

Parents may express a preference for any school they wish even if it is not their catchment school. However, applicants have a higher right of admission for their catchment area school. The CYPD cannot guarantee admission to any school even the catchment school.
