Tuition Fees

From September 2008, universities and colleges will be able to charge new students up to £3,145 per year for courses, however, eligible students will not have to pay tuition fees upfront.

Instead, you will be able to apply for a non means-tested tuition fee loan to cover the cost of your fees and this loan does not have to be paid back until after graduation.

Universities and colleges can charge up to £3,145 per year for tuition fees.

You should contact the university you are interested in to find out the level of fee being charged and details of any other financial help being offered (e.g. bursaries), as fees may vary between courses and establishments.

Different fee arrangements apply in Scotland.

Who is eligible?

The main conditions for qualifying for support are as follows.

You must:

  • be attending a designated course at a publicly funded College or University (designated courses include degrees, HND's, PGCE's, DipHE's, Part-time Cert-Eds and certain other undergraduate courses of 'A' level entry standard), and

  • have been ordinarily resident in the UK for the 3 year period immediately preceding the start of the course. If you have previously attended a course of this level for more than one academic year or have started more than one course you may not qualify, however, exceptional circumstances for leaving your previous course will be considered.

Please note that there are certain exceptions to the above residency rule (for example, in the case of refugees or people who have been out of the UK on a temporary working contract).

Please contact your local authority for further advice if your circumstances are not straightforward.

The Tuition Fee Loan

It is not means-tested on household income and will be paid directly to your university or college.

It is repayable once you have left university or college.
