Travel Expenses in Higher Education

What is a Travel Grant?

  • A grant to assist in paying for return journeys between the place of study at an overseas institute and back to the UK. The travel must be by the most reasonable mode of transport (on average 1 return journey per term).

  • Single parents who travel abroad can claim for return journeys for their child/children.

  • Daily travel costs can be claimed while abroad (i.e. rail tickets, bus tickets etc.)

Who qualifies for a Travel Grant?

  • Students attending courses in medicine and dentistry on a clinical year where they are not entitled to a means-tested bursary or award from the Department of Health.

  • Students attending an overseas institute. Students must be studying for at least 8 weeks consecutively at an overseas institute.

  • Students with a physical disability, where additional costs are recommended in their Assessment of Needs (AON).

You will usually have to meet the first £295 of these costs.

Please note that the Travel Grant is means-tested on household income.
